Dr. Whyte has thirty years of experience in the strategic planning, marketing, and operating of both service and health care organizations. As a former hospital CEO, he has successfully dealt with the marketing, operational and human resource challenges faced by today’s health care providers. Dr. Whyte has held leadership positions in the public and the private sectors, including not-for-profit and proprietary hospitals, community mental health centers, social service agencies and skilled nursing facilities.
Dr. Whyte has progressed through the various executive and administrative positions in his career including: Administrative Resident to the Executive Director of Bexar County (San Antonio) Mental Health and Mental Retardation Center; Executive Director of Children’s Service Bureau (San Antonio); Vice President for Strategic Planning and Marketing at St. Mary of the Plains Hospital (Lubbock); Administrator/CEO of HealthSouth Rehabilitation Center (New Orleans). In 1990, he founded GORDON WHYTE & ASSOCIATES, a health care marketing and management firm.
Dr. Whyte’s marketing work has been nationally recognized by the Academy of Health Services Marketing of the American Marketing Association. On a local and regional basis, he has won over thirty five awards for excellence in marketing. Dr. Whyte has published articles in professional journals on the topics of marketing of mental health services, marketing of obstetrics programs and the use of a sales force in the marketing of health care services.
He holds an M.S.H.C.A. and Ph.D. in Health Care Administration with a specialty in health care marketing; as well as degrees in counseling and psychology. He was a licensed nursing home administrator and served as administrator in four nursing homes in the New Orleans area. He also has served the Vice Chairman of the Department of Health Systems Management at Tulane University Medical Center’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine from 1991 to 2001. Dr. Whyte taught strategic planning, marketing, and management for twenty years including lecturing at Queensland University in Brisbane, Australia. From 1991 to 1995, he taught management and organizational behavior courses at Christian Medical College and the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in India.
Dr. Whyte has developed a reputation as one of the best meeting organizers and retreat facilitators. His style is engaging and garners participation from all of the meeting or retreat participants
Dr. Whyte served as the program director for executive and traditional MHA programs at Tulane University. He is the founder and former program director of the executive MPH program in health services administration at the University of Southern Mississippi.
In 2011 he joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Tyler in the Department of Social Sciences as the founder and program director of the Executive Health Care Administration MPA Program.
In September 2013, Dr. Whyte was promoted to become the founding director of the newly established Executive Education Center at the University of Texas at Tyler.
