Mary John Spence and her late husband Ralph have been longtime friends of this University. Without their support this institution would not be what it is today. Recently, we hosted a dedication of what will one day be the Spence Board Room and Gallery located inside our new alumni house. Construction on the alumni house will start this summer.
We are honored to have the continuing friendship of the Spence family and their generosity will forever be remembered.
A true champion of philanthropy, Ralph Spence served as the founding development board chair for UT Tyler from 1982 until his death in 1995. Noted contributions to UT Tyler include his leadership on the university’s R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center campaign and the remarkable Spence Fountain and Plaza.
The Spence family has given land for future expansion and generously supported students and faculty with the establishment of numerous endowed scholarships and faculty positions. In 1985, the Spences were named Patriots of the Year – the highest award given by UT Tyler. Ralph was also was a charter member of both the UT Tyler Eisenhower Golf Classic Society and President’s Associates.
Here are a few photos from the dedication.
